1. Which of the possible venues do you think would best suit this play? Why do you believe the dramatic action would be best served in this venue?
I would stage the p;lay in the cellar theater because it is a small intimate space. Considering that the play covers an extremely personal topic I believe this would be the perfect venue so that there are no distractions and the audiences is forced to face this topic head on.
2. What are some of the design challenges posed by the play?
A major design challenge is the staging of the car. A possibility is too simply seat the characters in the formation of the car. Additionally, we have to capture whats going on in this car including the atmosphere. If I were directing this play, I would have trouble of walking the lined between making the audience face the issue head on but not making them too uncomfortable that they leave.
3. Choose the various chorus characters and discuss how you see them dressed. In what ways do you think the costumes you describe would help articulate their purpose in this play?
I would use a very realistic approach to the play in order to bring the audiences main focus to the message of the play. Across all of the chorus characters I would have them dressed in semi-mted tones while still keeping with the fashion of the time period. Though they are of course very important (why else would the playwright have them there) I don't want to bring too much attention to them. I certainly wouldn't want the audiences main take away to be how much they absolutely adored the chorus characters' costumes. m
4. Provide some ideas about the use of light in the play?
I would use very dim and muted light to create a sense of tension that would draw the audience in. As the chorus character's came in I would use a completely separate light, possibly a spotlight, to create a sense that Lil Bit is isolated from them to emphasize how she feels as a victim.
5. Suggest music and sound effects that could help accentuate the mood or atmosphere of the play.
I would want the voice over of to sound unemotional and detached much like your typical instructional voice over. Also I would use some of the music she used as inspiration to really drive home the message that she was trying to convey and also some music from the time period in order to give context and atmosphere.
